Springridge Press, a media company that publishes six community newspapers and websites, has an opening at its Long Beach, MS, publication for a managing editor/account manager with a talent for community news and a passion for selling and servicing advertiser accounts in a way that leads to increased profit and visibility for the advertiser.
We are looking for a results-driven sales representative to actively seek out and engage customer prospects, who can provide complete and appropriate solutions for every customer in order to boost top-line revenue growth, customer acquisition levels and profitability.
In addition, the position involves reporting, writing, editing and copy editing, photography, ad sales and management, story planning and budgeting, oversight of freelance writers, interaction with community leaders and public relations representatives, attendance at community meetings and events, as well as activities related to the local distribution of the paper.
The managing editor serves as a primary representative of the company within the community. He/she is responsible for developing relationships with community leaders and news sources and for promoting the company in a positive and professional light. The managing editor is responsible for the entire production process of an assigned market's publication, editing all content that goes into the publication, for leading and providing oversight to his/her team, and for the timely submission of accurate, informative, and relevant news and feature stories.
This position requires the ability to meet deadlines, so multitasking capability is a must. In addition, we are looking for someone who has an understanding of the way City government functions. It is essential to be motivated, trustworthy and levelheaded under pressure to be successful in this position. If managed appropriately, the job is considered to be approximately a 40 hour/month part-time endeavor.
Execute the vision and mission of the newspaper as defined by the Editor-in-Chief and the Publisher, and accept coaching input and direction.
Produce excellently written, unbiased, accurate and compelling news stories in AP Style with no grammar or punctuation errors
Build and maintain relationships with community contacts and attend Chamber luncheons, City Council meetings, and other community events to maintain a steady flow of news and photos
Manage the entire editorial production process for monthly newspaper edition, including news, life and arts, community events and sports
Take photographs at local events and meetings
Effectively report on breaking news
Supervise the work of, coach, and lead any freelance reporters and the graphic designer to ensure that all work is performed according to company standards and within established deadlines
Provide oversight and leadership to freelance writers and photographers
Review, fact check and edit all articles, including those written by freelance reporters, to ensure the highest level of accuracy in reporting, that the tone and context of articles are appropriate, that all sources are properly checked, and that all articles are submitted by established deadlines
Exercise discretion and judgment in researching and writing content-appropriate and engaging stories, including features and in contributing graphics and sidebar content for each story
Interview news sources in person (occasionally via phone and email) and from a variety of perspectives to ensure accurate reporting
Shoot photographs for stories, as needed
Adhere to the company’s “Good news you can use” mission
Maintain positive business relationships to ensure future sales
Present, promote and sell ads using solid arguments to existing and prospective customers
Perform cost-benefit and needs analysis of existing/potential customers to meet their needs
Establish, develop and maintain positive business and customer relationships
Reach out to customer leads through cold calling
Expedite the resolution of customer problems and complaints to maximize satisfaction
Achieve agreed upon sales targets and outcomes within schedule
Coordinate sales effort with team members and other departments, where applicable
Analyze the territory/market’s potential, track sales and status reports
Supply management with reports on customer needs, problems, interests, competitive activities, and potential for new products and services.
Keep abreast of best practices and promotional trends
Continuously improve through feedback
Turn in monthly ad list, in standard company format, by assigned deadline
Ensure that all new ads and changes are communicated to the graphic designer by the deadline
Work with clients to make sure ad is approved before publication
The ideal candidate for this position should enjoy reporting and selling at the local level and be detail-oriented, energetic, creative and capable of following a system. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Previous experience working in a newsroom, as well as experience with sales, is preferred. Copy-editing skills and strong knowledge of AP Style and grammar are a must. Should be proficient in use of email, MS Word, MS Excel and comfortable enough with technology to utilize the company’s server for uploading and file management.

The ability to manage freelance staff and work cooperatively with other members of the team
Full and complete knowledge of AP style (NEVER write in 1st person)
The ability to write crisp, accurate and compelling stories, headlines and photo captions
The ability and desire to develop positive relationships with area contacts, entities and the public to facilitate the flow of information to the newspaper
Sufficient computer skills to load stories and photos in the proper format onto the Springridge Press server
A smartphone capable of taking photos and knowledge of how to transmit photos using the smartphone (necessary for the editing/proofing process with the designer)
A vehicle to travel to local events and to call on advertisers; valid drivers' license and proof of vehicle insurance must be provided
Proven work experience as a sales representative preferred
