TITLE: Audience Engagement Fellow

REPORTS TO: PolitiFact Executive Director
OVERALL JOB RESPONSIBILITY
The Audience Engagement Fellow, a one-year position, will be responsible for creating and cultivating PolitiFact’s online persona, and for growing PolitiFact’s overall reach and presence online. The selected candidate will focus on establishing trust with people through conversations and promoting PolitiFact work through social media channels.
The Audience Engagement Fellow will assist the Executive Director in developing PolitiFact’s strategy online, and assist PolitiFact fact-checkers and editors in developing best practices for posting content and engaging with readers. The Audience Engagement Fellow will moderate and participate in rich conversation with the intent to convert passive readers into dedicated readers and potential donors to PolitiFact.com. This digital-savvy employee is responsible for content creation, social media conversation and customer support to create relationships and build PolitiFact’s brand, both online and off. In this role, you will be responsible for identifying key target audiences for PolitiFact work, understanding the business metrics to convert those audiences into donors. The Audience Engagement Fellow, working with the Executive Director, will also be a fierce but thoughtful defender of PolitiFact in the face of critics.
You will also be expected to be able to dive deep into analytics to best understand how to drive results, reach KPIs and achieve goals. This position will be responsible for growing audience (social media and digital properties).
- Creates content in the form of writing blog posts, articles, newsletters, communications materials and content for social media channels and other platforms to engage PolitiFact readers and potential readers.
- Curates content produced by PolitiFact and determines how, when and where to share with the community.
- Grows social media audiences to reach specific and measurable goals, and train and share social media best practices with staff.
- Communicates PolitiFact’s brand in an authentic manner to attract readers into our suite of learning products.
- Identifies target customer groups and prepares plans to engage and convert them into readers and potential donors.
- Manages and responds to customer comments and feedback promptly, at times after standard business hours.
- Uses analytics and measurement tools to provide insights on metrics and to quantify and report on success indicators.
- Ensures that our social media assets are compelling, engaging, accurate and within our brand voice.
- Moderates conversations with the community to advance engagement and conversion in a manner that is friendly and relatable.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The PolitiFact Executive Director is responsible for monitoring the Audience Engagement Fellow’s progress and performance. The Audience Engagement Fellow may also be asked to work with the Poynter.org Managing Editor as needed, to coordinate strategies, workflow and messaging.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: The position contains no direct reports.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
Establishing and cultivating relationships internally and externally is key to success in this position.
INTERNAL: Interacts with the PolitiFact team on a daily basis for collaboration on audience engagement, growth and learning conversion. Interacts frequently with Marketing and Poynter Editorial departments on key assignments, as needed.
EXTERNAL: Maintains cooperative relationships with PolitiFact’s readers and partners.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism marketing, public relations or related experience is required. An understanding of the design and function of popular social media sites a must, along with proficiency in editing content and online reputation management. Candidates with experience creating graphics or videos is a plus, as are candidates with experience digging into analytics tools to better understand who our visitors are, and what they’re searching for.
PROBLEM SOLVING/DECISION MAKING: Good judgment and high adaptability; a level-headed attitude; and the ability to respond appropriately and with clarity.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires sitting for extended periods, while at the computer and answering and placing telephone calls. Requires moving throughout the building and occasionally to outside business offices. Requires the ability to manipulate fingers to operate computer keyboard and mouse. The Audience Engagement Fellow will be expected to work under and meet precise deadlines. Routine interruptions and unforeseen assignments are to be expected.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Duties are performed in a non-smoking office environment. On occasion, the Audience Engagement Fellow may be required to travel on behalf of the Institute.
